2018 photo contest winner - Jenny Harris
Thank you for participating in our Photo Contest and helping us share the beauty of Hidden Valleys in Southwest Wisconsin!
My name is Jennifer Harris and my passion is photography. For Christmas 2014 I decided I was going to invest in an unexplored passion I had and purchase a DSLR camera for myself as a "Christmas present".
I spent hours pouring over internet sites looking for any and all information I could get on good DSLR cameras for a beginner. I settled on my Nikon D3300 and am still using it today. It came with a few "kit" lenses and along the way I purchased one other lens. I take most of my photos with an 18-55 mm VR II lens.
After I got my camera I took to the internet and watched tons of videos made by several photography gurus and I read all I could about photography and the operation of my camera. I follow several photography groups on social media and make it a point to interact with any photographer that is willing to impart a bit of wisdom on the trade. I am still learning new tricks and techniques from fellow photographers every day.
I have to say that photography has inspired me to be more adventurous. I took a friend and her children out for a photo session at a local park. While trying to take a photo of them on the edge of a stream, my feet slipped out from under me and I landed in the rushing stream water where I completed a full summer sault, all with my camera around my neck. Luckily nothing was injured but my pride and despite my camera getting fully submerged, it survived too!
I find my inspiration for my photos in everyday details. I believe that there is a photo in everything we look at, if we care to take the time to really see the beauty in our surroundings. The play of light and shadow really fascinate me, and I love to capture pictures in all sorts of light. Nature provides an enormous canvas of beauty and Southwestern Wisconsin has an abundance of natural beauty. Southwest Wisconsin, with its changing seasons; rolling hills; farm land; streams and wild life, is one of my favorite places to explore and take pictures.
