Green County
Albany | Brodhead | Monroe | Monticello | New Glarus
Many years ago when the soil of the rolling hills of Green County was depleted due to wheat farming, innovative farmers began raising dairy cattle. The abundance of quality milk led to an abundance of cheese factories – prompting the Green County area to become known today as the Specialty Cheese Capital of the U.S.A.
Among the many highlights visitors enjoy are cheese factory and brewery tours, museums, bike and ATV trails, cheese making history, railroad history, and shopping.
In addition to a host of locally made products including cheese, beer, wine, sausage, and chocolate, Green County is also well-known for ethnic Swiss specialty cuisine.
