Journey around Monroe County!

Monroe County
Where Cranberry Country is your Gateway to Adventure
Nestled in the northeastern part of Wisconsin’s scenic Driftless Region, Monroe County offers a compelling mix of history, outdoor wonder, quirky attractions, and festival fun. Whether you’re pedaling through tunnels, sampling local flavor, or soaking up small-town charm, this is a place where surprises await.
A Slice of History
Monroe County was founded in 1854 and takes its name from President James Monroe. Over the decades, its story has been shaped by agriculture, railroads, and the unique terrain of the Driftless Area. The historic Monroe County Courthouse in Sparta, built in 1895 in Romanesque style, stands as a marker of that past. Visitors can also dive into local heritage at the Monroe County Local History Room & Museum in Sparta, which preserves artifacts, photographs, and stories of the county’s evolution.
Unique Attractions & Outdoor Adventures
For outdoor lovers and curious explorers alike, Monroe County shines. The famous Elroy‑Sparta State Trail was the first rail-to-trail conversion in the United States and includes three historic railroad tunnels that beckon cyclists and hikers. If you’re cycling through and want a memorable photo, the enormous “World’s Largest Bicyclist” statue in Sparta is quirky and fun.
Nature abounds, too: the region offers hundreds of miles of snowmobile trails, dozens of trout streams, and the rolling terrain that characterizes the Driftless Region landscapes. Add to that hidden gems like the Wegner Grotto County Park (an outsider-art landscape of glass-embedded concrete features), and you’ve got a place with both nature and whimsy.
Festivals & Local Flavor
Monroe County knows how to throw a good festival. A summer kickoff party is held each June, known as the Sparta Butterfest. Stop by and enter yourself into a contest to win free butter for a year! In September, the town of Warrens (population 541) hosts the massive Warrens Cranberry Festival — touted as the largest cranberry-themed festival in the U.S., with hundreds of booths, parades, and cranberry-centric fun. Nearly 150,000 people from around the world will converge on the tiny village of Warrens. For something truly off-beat, small towns like Leon host events like “Gatorfest” built around a humorous alligator motif or Weenie Fest in Wilton, proving this county has personality beyond the expected.
Why Visit?
Monroe County may not always top big destination lists, but precisely because of that, it delivers something special: a genuine small-town welcoming spirit, landscapes that feel rugged and authentic, and attractions that stop you in your tracks. Whether you’re looking to ride a historic trail with tunnels, sample Wisconsin’s cranberry or cheese culture, or simply stroll downtown and discover a tucked-away museum or landmark, you’ll find memorable moments.
So plan to bring your bike or your walking shoes, leave space for spontaneity, and head to Monroe County — there’s more than you know waiting to be discovered.
