Juneau County
Where Nature and Lakes are your Backyard

Nestled in the scenic heart of central Wisconsin’s Driftless Area, Juneau County invites travelers to experience a rich blend of nature, heritage, and small-town festivals. With its rolling hills, abundant forests, and riverscarred bluffs, this corner of the state offers both peaceful escape and lively community celebration.

A Brief Look at History

Established in 1857 and named after Solomon Juneau, one of the founders of Milwaukee, Juneau County was carved out of adjacent territory to create a region uniquely its own. Long before European settlers arrived, Native American peoples left their mark here—most visibly in the effigy-mound clusters of the Cranberry Creek Archeological District near New Miner in the county, where more than 300 burial mounds speak to ancient cultures of the Woodland period. Agriculture quickly became a mainstay, while the terrain—with its forests and waterways—laid the groundwork for outdoor recreation in the years to come.

Nature & Unique Attractions

If you’re looking to pull away from the crowds, Juneau County delivers. The Necedah National Wildlife Refuge spans some 43,000 acres of bog, prairie, savanna, and woodland, and serves as a nest site for the once-endangered whooping crane. Water lovers and trail seekers will appreciate the county’s access to the 400 State Trail rail-trail that threads through forest and bluff country between Elroy and Wonewoc. On the lakeside front, the scenic 6,990-acre Buckhorn State Park rests on a peninsula of Castle Rock Lake, inviting boating, fishing, hiking, and shoreline exploration. Whether you’re pedaling along a converted rail bed, spotting rare birds in marshes, or casting a line into a quiet lake at dawn, the natural side of Juneau County offers serenity with a side of adventure.

Festivals & Community Spirit

Juneau County prides itself on deep-rooted community celebrations that reflect its agricultural heart and friendly vibe. Foremost among these is the annual Juneau County Fair in Mauston—first held in 1866 and now in its 159th edition—running typically each August. Expect livestock shows, 4-H exhibits, demo derbies, parades, and family-friendly entertainment (free gate & parking make it especially accessible). Another popular event is the Elroy Fair, held in the village of Elroy, offering everything from tractor pulls and hot farm machinery to carnival rides and live music—a perfect taste of rural festival culture.

Why Visit?

Juneau County may not be “destination famous,” but that’s part of its appeal: here you’ll find authenticity, quieter trails, genuine hospitality, and locally owned eateries rather than crowds. Want to explore driftless bluffs by day and relax lakeside by evening? Walk historic streets in Mauston or Wonewoc? And then join a hometown fair under the summer stars? That’s what this place delivers.

Whether you’re chasing bird migrations, biking through oak-savanna ridges, or simply savoring Midwestern delights, Juneau County offers a memorable getaway for those who appreciate nature and community in equal measure. Pack your outdoor gear, your sense of adventure—and a calendar with a week set aside.
