Where Organic Farming and Winding Rivers Collide
Tucked into the western part of Wisconsin’s scenic Driftless Region, Vernon County invites visitors with its rolling bluffs, winding rivers, and rich agricultural and cultural heritage. Whether you’re biking through valley vistas, sampling locally-grown food, or shopping at an Amish store, this destination offers plenty of character along with natural beauty.
With its steep, rugged hills, untouched by the ice age glaciers, Vernon County is breathtaking around every corner. The picturesque Kickapoo River and Mighty Mississippi River brings out outdoor recreation abounds in Vernon County. Enjoy water sports, hiking, biking trails, camping, hunting, and fishing.
A Glimpse into History
Vernon County was founded in 1851 and originally named Bad Ax County; in 1862, the name was changed to Vernon, after Mount Vernon. Early settlers were drawn by fertile land, abundant forests, and river valleys carved by nature’s forces. The striking geology of the region — part of the Driftless Area — means the land was never flattened by glaciers, leaving a dramatic terrain of bluffs, hollows, and rivers. Historic buildings still stand, such as the limestone-and-towered Vernon County Courthouse in Viroqua, built in 1880 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The county’s past is also visible in its farm architecture, with round barns and classic dairy farms dotting the countryside. Land Conservation Practices also started in the heart of Vernon County with the Coon Creek Watershed project in the 1930s and continues strongly today with the need for water control.
Unique Attractions & Outdoor Adventures
If you love nature, Vernon County delivers! The Wildcat Mountain State Park offers sweeping views over the Kickapoo River valley and is open year-round for hiking, canoeing, and skiing. Nearby, the Kickapoo Valley Reserve spans thousands of acres of protected lands and waterways, inviting paddlers, cyclists, and bird-watchers to explore its ridges and valleys.
For a cultural stop, the Norskedalen Nature & Heritage Center celebrates the region’s Norwegian immigrant roots with restored log buildings from the 1850s and hands-on experiences of pioneer life along with great hiking paths, wedding venue, cabin, annual events and much more. Meanwhile, the thriving local food scene and organic agriculture offer another dimension of travel beyond just vistas.

The community spirit in Vernon County shines through its festivals and gatherings. The crown jewel is Westby’s Syttende Mai held in mid-May. The celebration recognizes the area’s rich Norwegian heritage. If you’re visiting in summer, the Rise & Shine Balloon Rally in June offers a unique experience and offers rides in a hot air balloon.
